Charlotte Church faces bankruptcy if her £1.5m ‘wellness retreat’ fails

Charlotte Church could face bankruptcy if her eco-friendly wellness retreat fails.

The singer, 35, is in a race against time to open her retreat, and previously joked that her fortune could all be gone by next summer if her plans aren’t successful.

She has spent £1.5million buying Rhydoldog, a 16th-century mansion in Elan Valley, Powys and wants to build an off-grid retreat offering cold-water swimming, archery, foraging, yoga and hiking.

The 47-acre estate was previously owned by designer Laura Ashley and renovation costs are expected to total a further £1.2million.

However Charlotte will face a race against time to get her resort up and running, as she has been lumbered with an objection from the highways department of Powys county council.

Earlier this year, the singer told The Times that unless the project is finished by summer 2022, she will be “broke”.

She has been given £300,000 by her parents towards the renovation costs and is being helped in the restoration by friends, who are local builders.

The decision on the renovations will go before the local authority’s planning committee at the end of January.

Charlotte is still very much in the limelight after landing her own property TV show on Discovery’s Really channel, which sees her attempting to transform her estate into a luxurious wellness retreat.

She is planning to document the journey and will let fans share the process in her brand new show, Charlotte’s Dream Build.

She’ll be seen working away on the renovations over eight 60-minute episodes.

She plans to turn the estate into a relaxing wellness centre and top-notch wedding venue.

Charlotte, who is mum to Ruby, 13, Dexter, 12, and a baby girl with husband Jonathan Powell, said: “I feel so grateful to have been able to buy this house. I’m absolutely obsessed with the woodlands and the outside space.

“It’s such a special place. I’m really curious about the process of developing the wellness retreat and all the upskilling I’ll be learning about building – I hope!”

Charlotte is looking so different these days that she recently went unrecognised as she busked in Wales.

Dressed in a fluffy red coat, she joined a young choir in Cardiff city centre to raise money for her Awen Project learning centre, which she runs with her husband, who joined the performance to play guitar.

When asked how she felt about not being recognised, Charlotte told Wales Online : “It’s been lush. It’s all about the children.”
