Happy Mondays’ Shaun Ryder says Bez rejected Julia Roberts in the 1990s

Happy Mondays star Shaun Ryder revealed his former bandmate Bez rejected Julia Roberts during her Pretty Woman prime.

The 58-year-old singer appeared on This Morning to chat to co-hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about what went down.

In the early 90s, Shaun remembers going to the famous club, called The Viper Room, with Bez – real name Mark Berry – in Los Angeles.

Bez left his pal Shaun on his own before returning a while later to tell him: “You heard of Julia Roberts? She’s just asked me to go to her place.”

Shaun went on to tell the ITV presenters: “And he didn’t have a clue who she was, but she sent her bodyguard over, Evil. Her bodyguard’s name was something like Evil.”

However, Bez ended up turning her down because “he had about four other girls on the go in the club anyway”.

Holly, who was completely shocked, questioned Shaun: “So he turned down Julia Roberts?”

Julia rose to fame as Daisy Arujo in 1988’s Mystic Pizza and, two years later, she starred as Vivian Ward in Pretty Woman.

The 53-year-old took on the role of a prostitute who meets wealthy businessman, Edward Lewis, to accompany him for his many business functions and social events for a week.

The romantic classic, which also stars Richard Gere, is based on Roy Orbison’s hit song ‘Oh, Pretty Woman’.

Julia married singer Lyle Lovett in 1993 and the two stayed together until 1995.

Her husband is now Daniel Moder, who she married in 2002.

Meanwhile, Happy Mondays were formed in 1980 and were last on tour in 2019.

Bez and Shaun currently appear alongside one another on Celebrity Gogglebox.

Shaun recently appeared on GB News to talk to Neil Oliver and opened up about struggling at school due to his ADHD, which he was only diagnosed with last year.

Host Neil said: “I’ve got a good one for you from Paul, Paul was diagnosed dyspraxic in 2017 at the age of 47 and he now has a BSC in psychology research and Paul asks ‘Did your school years ever leave feeling accepted in society?’”

Without hesitation, Shaun responded: “F***ing absolutely, like I said I didn’t know the alphabet until I was about 28!”

Shaun, who is releasing his first solo album in 18 years, said ADHD ultimately led to him using drugs at the height of fame.
